Not the usual rescue

SPCA's unconventional method results in two very happy endings

The Randburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) had to use some unconventional methods to save a dog from a tight spot.

The SPCA’s Debbie Kegel said they received a phone call from Diepsloot resident Molefe Mosenugi, who explained that a dog had been stuck between two walls for more than five hours. “The dog was hit on the head and he ran into the space, wedging himself in between a seven foot high corrugated iron wall and a brick wall. The owner of the brick wall said we could break it down, but we feared that the bricks might fall on the dog.”

Kegel had the idea to use cooking oil to grease the space and the poor hound, and attempt to slide the dog out of the space. “I bought two litres of cooking oil, and after an hour, we managed to get the dog loose. We had oil all over us. Immediately after he was rescued we took him to the vet.”

The society’s staff named the dog Castrol – like the British global brand of industrial and automotive lubricants. The dog’s owner had no intention of taking the dog home. Although Mosenugi would he would love to give Castrol a home, he was not able to as he is unemployed and unable to care for him. Castrol has a lovable and gentle nature and the society’s staff did everything they could to find this lovely animal a home. It wasn’t long after Castrol’s traumatic ordeal that Sharonlea resident Lesley Hay visited the society and fell in love with him. “He is a handful, but he is a sweetie pie and we therefore renamed him Pie.”

The society was so impressed with Mosenugi’s attitude and compassion that they employed him and he is now working for the society full-time.
