Swimming for charity
Paediatrician to swim the Midmar Mile for sick children.
Not only does paediatrician Dr Klaus Leschner care for his patients, he also swims to make a difference in their lives.
Leschner has been competing in the Midmar Mile for the past few years. ”I swim to raise money for Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics (Choc). You have to raise a certain amount of money before you can enter.”
The event takes place at the Midmar Dam near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal on 8 and 9 February. The 8 Mile Charity Club organises the charity race and raises funds for many charities.
The club was founded in 2004 and is run by Mervyn Bremmer, Richard Stretch and Stan Kozlowski.
Leschner said about 50 swimmers compete in the charity race. ”I collected R10 000 for Choc so far. But I also compete for the enjoyment.”
According to Leschner there are four one-mile events on the first day and another four one-mile events on the second day. ”It takes me about 31 minutes to swim a mile and I train up to four times a week.
”I really do believe Choc is a wonderful support system for both the child and the child’s family. I want to keep on supporting them.”
