Business owner hard pressed

Ward councillor and committee member oppose businesses’ wall despite permission.

A wall being constructed by the primary tenant of French Court entertainment complex is under criticism despite its legitimacy.

The wall is on the side of Oxford Street, near the street’s corner with Eton Avenue, Randburg, and is only one metre away from the road.

There is concern that the pavement between the wall and Oxford Street is now too narrow and endangers pedestrians.

”This is a life threatening situation as people have to step into the road when they want to pass someone,” said Ward 104 committee member Erwin Schwentzek. ”This wall should immediately be pulled down, not when the first person has been knocked down by a car.”

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said the ”building is over the line”.

However, the primary tenant of French Court, who did not wish to be named, has the documents to prove he is within his right to build the wall where it is and has permission from the building inspector.

He produced documentation from the city council, dating as far back as 1969 and being approved as early as 1994, that specifies the borders of his property.

“I put the wall up to the pavement. If it was half a metre back people will be walking on my property. We are already cutting back a bit on the one corner,” said the tenant.
