Jerseys donated to charity organisations

RANDBURG - Knitting club from Northwold retirement village donated time and wool for a worthy cause.

Talented knitting women from Northwold Terrace Retirement Village combined their skills to knit jerseys and donate them to various charities.

Ann Turton, who spearheads the knitting club at the retirement village, said the jerseys were handed over to different charities recently at a prestigious event.

About 664 jerseys were knitted by 20 dedicated members of the club who gave their precious time to help out, on this worthy cause. “About 20 years ago a handful of talented women started this initiative after they decided that they wanted to do something good for the community,” explained Turton.

The Rainbow Day Care Centre and the neonatal division at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital were among the organisations that received jerseys at the event.

Turton explained that a company called Floral Affairs and two women Jenny Ralph and Martie Meiring donated the wool about a year ago for the project.

Dawn Silver, who was part of the knitting team said, “We made the jerseys for small children that live in informal settlements as they will be affected by colder temperatures during winter.” Turton urged the public to call her if they want to donate wool for next year’s initiative.
