Community says farewell to ‘O’

OLIVEDALE – Hundreds of Chinese lanterns light up the sky in honour of slain shop manager.

Hundreds of Chinese lanterns lit up the night sky on 2 August as the Olivedale community paid their last respects to Ou Jin, the manager of the Wok Inn at Olivedale Corner.

Jin (27) was killed in an armed robbery on 26 July when six armed robbers stormed the shop and fled the scene with undisclosed items.

He had recently completed a law degree and was ready to take on the world when his life was cut short after being shot in the abdomen at close range. His mother was also present and could only hold him as the life left his body.

Jin’s aunt Shuerry Chin gave a moving speech at the memorial service, remembering a hardworking and dependable Jin. “This must be one of the most difficult and heart-breaking last goodbyes. You were only 27. You will no longer have the family and happiness that people of your age should experience. At least you are in heaven now.”

Shanghai Industry and Commerce Organisation in South Africa member, Simon Shi, was also present and stated that the Chinese community has been shocked by the crime. “We have been deeply saddened. Since the beginning of the year, 11 of our members have been murdered for no reason. We have to be strong and work together to fight back against crime, and we will win,” said Shi to the cheer of community members.

“A case of murder and armed robbery has been opened and the investigation is at a sensitive stage and still ongoing,” stated Douglasdale Police spokesperson, Balan Muthan. “We urge members of the community who saw anything suspicious in the area that night, to contact us or report it at their nearest police station.”
