Water infrastructure upgrades are underway

RANDBURG – Johannesburg Water urges the community to remain vigilant during the water infrastructure upgrades.

Johannesburg Water will be spending about R190 million to upgrade water infrastructure in a number of suburbs in the Northern parts of Johannesburg, starting in the month of May.

During the construction period, there will be open trenches while the pipes are being replaced or installed. Johannesburg Water requests residents to be extra vigilant when there is an open trench in their area to avoid accidents, and a special plea to parents to assist the entity by keeping their children away from these construction sites.

About 120 000 metres of pipe will be replaced in these areas over a period of time using a number of different contractors, and in turn, creating employment opportunities for the residents.

Johannesburg Water says that they recognise the inconvenience residents experience when a pipe bursts and water supply has to be shut down unexpectedly as a result of emergency repairs. The entity says they are aware of the rapid growth of the City which calls for infrastructure expansion to meet the daily demands. These are some of the reasons Johannesburg Water has undertaken to place water infrastructure upgrades as one of its priorities.

Johannesburg Water wants to put the safety of the residents first whenever it is embarking on activities involving excavations. This is done by ensuring open trenches are properly barricaded and warning signage erected at all times. In addition, the organisation will continue to engage with and educate residents about dangers of some of the construction sites.

Areas where water infrastructure upgrades will be taking place:

Bramley North Ext 1 and Lombardy East

Lonehill

Randpark Ext 4

Malanshof Ext 5

Strijdom Park

Dunkeld and Dunkeld West

Morningside Ext 1 and 40
