Pikitup steps up

GOLDEN HARVEST PARK – Old municipal nursery and Golden Harvest Park communities get wheelie bins.

People living in the old municipal nursery in Golden Harvest Park, and the community living in the City Park houses in the park, finally received Pikitup wheelie bins.

After years of feeling that the City neglected them, the two communities finally received one of the many requests they had been in desperate need of.

Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele said after a public meeting with the community members, where they raised the issue of the need for bins, he took the matter up with Pikitup so that the bins could be issued. “I also requested Pikitup to issue bins to the residents’ houses in Golden Harvest Park.”

Pikitup has now included the two communities in the Wednesday schedule to collect refuse.

David Hadebe, a community representative for the old municipal nursery, on the corner of Olievenhout Avenue and Douglas Crescent, explained that in the 10 years that he has lived in the community, this gesture was the first of its kind.

“It took some time for us to get the bins as we had been asking for them since the beginning of the year.”

He added that they had a meeting in May with Cele where they stressed the need for bins, along with the need to have toilets. Hadebe said they have to use toilets at petrol stations and it is not safe.

He told Randburg Sun that two women were attacked and robbed as they made their way to use these toilets three months ago.

“We are, however, very grateful for these bins, as now our community will be cleaner and we now feel recognised by our City,” said Hadebe. He concluded that they now want to approach City Parks to request that they cut down overgrown shrubs which seem to be a hiding spot for criminals.
