Silverstream hosts Breast Cancer Awareness Month high tea
RANDPARK RIDGE – Silverstream Retirement Village Randpark hosted a high tea as Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close.
Last week Silverstream Retirement Village in Randpark Ridge hosted a high tea in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The high tea was open to residents at the retirement village as well as guests where it also doubled as a handover to Wings of Hope.
The morning facilitated discussion about the disease and gave a platform to the non-profit organisation. Fotini Domnakis said, “Wings of Hope is made up of breast cancer survivors and their spouses who offer a great deal of support… Men are also diagnosed with breast cancer, so please remember that early
detection saves lives. I am a perfect example of this. I did not have to go through chemo or radiation due to early detection.”
Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood also shared a few words after he confirmed that he would not resign anytime soon, “As a cancer survivor myself, I salute you for all that you are doing and please continue to do it! God bless you.”
Wings of Hope is the charity organisation which Silverstream has chosen to partner with this year. At the event, Silverstream handed over ‘knitted knockers’ which serve as breast replacements for people who have undergone mastectomies (the removal of one or more breasts).
These ‘knockers’ have served as a replacement for women who have opted out of breast reconstruction surgery for whichever reason, for restored confidence.
Wings of Hope would like to be recognised as a support group for people in any stage of the breast cancer journey. The organisation was sure to advertise their Christmas party on 23 November, which they opened to everyone.
Attendees enjoyed a variety of sweet and savoury treats, supplemented by their choice of tea or coffee. The bright sunshine was an extension of the cheer and engagement in the room, which helped demystify life during and after the disease.
