Take extra precaution this winter – City

The City of Johannesburg takes a proactive approach with this year’s Winter Fire Safely Campaign, following 445 fire incidents reported in informal settlements last year.

The City of Johannesburg residents to take extra precautions this winter.

At the ecent launch of its Winter Fire Safety Campaign, MMC for Public Safety David Tembe said the City would be intensifying its community outreach programmes throughout winter to educate communities on how to safely utilise heating devices.

“The launch comes at a time when the city experiences fire incidents, fatalities and injuries particularly in informal settlements as the winter sets in,” said Tembe.

In 2021, emergency services responded to an estimated 445 fire incidents in informal settlements and the number of incidents reported during winter this year is already concerning and if left unmanaged could lead to unnecessary deaths and loss of property.

“These unforeseen circumstances can, however, be prevented if people use proper cooking and heating devices.”

Tembe added that domestic fires were mainly caused by lighting and heating devices that were not regulated. In most cases, these devices exploded and started fires.

Illegal electricity connections and improperly placed candles could also cause great damage.

“It is for this reason that we are intensifying our community outreach programmes this winter season through the Public Information Education and Relations section. We will be advising communities throughout the city of Johannesburg on how to use the heating and lighting appliances safely.”

Door-to-door campaigns will target informal settlements across all seven regions.
