Phola seek support to provide shelter to gender based violence survivors
The shelter will be a drop in sanctuary and safe house for women and girls escaping abuse and imminent harm from immediate or intimate partners.
Phola solemnly appeals to the Randburg community to help buy a shelter house for women and girls who are gender-based violence survivors.
Partnership and development manager, Tamsanqa Mlilo said that the envisaged shelter will not only intervene in mental health issues and provide psycho-social support but it will run entrepreneurship skills development programmes to empower women so that they are economically independent and less dependent on abusive men.
“The shelter home will be guided by the following values and principles; accountability, empowerment, participation, family-centred, person-centred, community centred and restorative justice.”
Phola appeals to the generous Randburg community to support this noble cause of opening a shelter home. “It will save lives and protect girls from all forms of abuse. The biggest challenge is the purchase of the property, refurbishment and running costs.”
“We will greatly appreciate any form of support,” added Mlilo
Mlilo thanks the Randburg community for its generous support throughout the year 2022. “Your goodwill and support made it possible for Phola to fulfil its mandate of providing mental health and psychosocial services to the different communities in Johannesburg, especially to the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals and families during their hour of need.”
He added that Phola services were graciously extended to schools and the programmes generated much interest, excitement, and appreciation. “Due to the highly impactful of our methodologies which tackle gender-based violence, more schools are seeking collaboration/partnership with us in 2023.”
