Ward councillor to assist school children in need

Ward 114 councillor David Mangena urges Zandspruit community to support the back-to- school campaign and donate old uniforms and shoes.

Ward 114 councillor David Mangena launched the back-to-school shoes campaign to assist children in need in Zandspruit.

The aim of the campaign is to assist parents who can not afford to buy their children school shoes and uniforms.

Mangena explained that the campaign will benefit disadvantage background children. “We are going to give the donations out month-end of February or in the first week of March. We don’t want to give to people who can afford. People start buying uniforms in January and in February – that is where we can see people who are in need. We do not just donate, we want to touch and change lives.

The ward councillor announced Ntswako Port as one of the sponsors for the campaign. “We were called by Motswako Pot – they want to be part of the campaign. They want to donate something. We are also talking to other companies to join so that the campaign can be big.”

Masakhane Primary School, Zandspruit Primary School and Far North High school are among the schools to benefit from the campaign.

Mangena encouraged Zandspruit residents to support the back-to-school campaign and support each other. “I encourage the community to contribute to each other. Let’s grow the culture of Ubuntu so that we can minimise poverty. Let’s assist each other where it is possible, especially, those who can.”

He added that people can donate shoes, uniforms, school bags and stationery. “Donations can be taken to Mthonjeni Community Centre. Let’s show love to one another; let’s share whatever we can and anything will be appreciated.”
