Randpark resident speaks about his fight with cancer and being three years in remission

Jonathan Rudolph now helps others through his acupuncture and wellness centre.

Only those who have received a cancer diagnosis can truly appreciate the significance of it.

It is a serious wake-up call and alarm warning to turn one’s habits on their head and start living healthy.

Randpark resident Jonathan Rudolph had been through abuse, trauma, drug addiction and divorce already in his life before being diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 39.

It was another blow, but those who know Rudolph know he does not quit without a fight.

“I was told there is a 50% recovery rate for people under the age of 40 and I was given a month to live if I did not start treatment immediately,” he said.

After trying to fight cancer himself through cannabis for a month, only to see more tumours develop, Rudolph agreed to chemotherapy, which he called one of the hardest things in his life.

“I also studied biology closely and worked on my lifestyle, making sure I supported my kidneys, liver and other organs. I switched to cold showers to better stimulate my nerves. I exercised and visited friends to talk about my grief and trauma. I eliminated coffee and stimulants and I had massages,” added the 42-year-old, who is now nearly three years in remission.

“I went vegan and bought an ozone sauna pod. I looked into psychedelic treatment for emotional pain and mental illness, rather than prescribed medication.”

Over time, his 12 chemotherapy treatments, completed over six months, destroyed the cancer cells but they came at a price – loss of bladder control sometimes, nausea and other mild illnesses.

Rudolph also made the mistake of continuing to work hard at the start of the treatments, so had to learn to slow down and see his work-life balance restored.

For Rudolph it is now all about giving back through his acupuncture and wellness centre affiliated with the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association.

Whether massages, Eastern medicines and acupuncture, psychedelic treatments or support groups with fellow addicts or cancer survivors, Rudolph is trying to better his community one step at a time.

“For those who have been diagnosed with cancer, I would encourage you to focus on not panicking. Catch your breath. This moment matters and how you live now is most important.”
