Strijdompark company CEO spent a day in a wheelchair to raise awareness

CEOs are challenged to spend a day in a wheelchair and share their experiences and raising awareness for those using wheelchairs for mobility

Strijdompark-based company U Can Store CEO, Nick Teixeira participated in the Little Eden Society CEO Wheelchair Campaign for charity to raise awareness and compassion about the challenges experienced daily by those who rely on wheelchairs for mobility.

The campaign was aimed to create empathy for people all over South Africa who use wheelchairs every day and to encourage greater consideration for them.

Teixeira was challenged to spend a day in a wheelchair and he said that his experience on March 30, made him feel very grateful to be self-sufficient.

“It made me realise that we should not take for granted what we have and what we are able to do. The experience taught me to be more mindful of people living with disabilities and how important it is to cater to their needs. Be it parking near an entrance, a disabled toilet that is easily accessible or ramps that make it easy for one to get around in a wheelchair.”

He added that being in the wheelchair slowed him down significantly.

“For a person that always has 101 things on the go, I found it difficult. I had to rely on my wife to assist with a few things which could be frustrating.”

Little Eden Society is home to 300, mostly abandoned, children and adults with profound intellectual disabilities.

Little Edens’s Gaahele Mokgoro said one of the objectives is to raise funds and assist the home financially, to keep its doors open.

Teixeira added that he strongly recommends that other CEOs participate in the campaign next year.

“This makes one realise how important support structures like “Little Eden” are for people living with disabilities and how they can assist in mobilising funding to keep the structures going,” said Teixeira.
