3 reasons you should start knitting, according to a group of Northgate residents

Socialising, giving to charity and improving mental health are all reasons one should knit.

There are a number of physical, mental and social benefits to start knitting, so why delay?

This is what a group of Northgate residents feel, who began a knitting club at their retirement village. Celebration Retirement Estate recently held a knitting exhibition for these lovely ladies to showcase their work, all in aid of charity.

Teddy bears, scarves, beanies, blankets and other clothes were on display while raffles were held and donations were taken for 67 Blankets, the maternity and pedaetric wards at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, and Toys for Joy.

Co-founder of the club, Emma Beard spoke on why they knit, and by extension, why the average Jane, or Joe, should consider starting.

  • To socialise

“We started the group to get the residents that were all alone and cooped up during and after Covid-19 to socialise,” Beard explained. Once a person becomes fairly proficient at knitting they can do so without having to concentrate. This means groups of friends can sit, knit and talk together.

  • To give back

In South Africa there is always someone in need of a blanket or jersey. “Many of us have no more space to make things for ourselves, so charity came to mind. Most of us are living on set incomes, so we needed charities and cash to support our endeavours. Doing this also shows that we can still be of service to the less privileged.”

  • A kind of therapy

Knitting allows someone to take their mind off the troubles of the world and work towards a problem that can be solved. Beard said knitting individually or in a group can benefit the mind and restore order to things as one focuses on their handiwork.

Beard said anyone interested in finding out more or donating to the knitting club can contact her.
