Learners introduced to ecosystems at Delta Park

Grade 10 learners embark on the nature hunt, of ecosystems in the parks green.

Delta Park Environmental Centre introduces learners to different kinds of ecosystems as part of their education offering. There is a specially formed school programme created for Grade 10 learners who come to the facility in small tours.

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their non-living environment. Ecosystems are made up of living things and non-living things.

Ella Roberts, a facilitator at Delta Park, explains the purpose of the sessions, “Learners are working on ecosystems and learn about the biodiversity of those ecosystems. Biodiversity means the trees, grass, insects, flowers, and birds. We want to make students aware of ecosystems and to become aware of the environment by knowing which of the ecosystems is biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living),” she said.

Embarking on the enlightening journey with the Delta Park Environmental Centre facilitators, learners search through a detailed web of living organisms, their environment, and the dynamic interplay with non-living components.

“Ecosystems shape the earth, influencing climate, biodiversity, and life’s prosperity.”

The Delta Park museum has several different ecosystem displays including this green land one which is used for teaching students.

Geoff Lockwood, acting executive officer and facilitator at the centre, further explained, “Learners are introduced to the kind of techniques that we use when we study ecology or do biodiversity assessments. This programme is just for them to be aware of nature; it is an ecosystem awareness programme.”

Learners were also allowed to look at the museum at the centre to visualise other ecosystems. “Learners are exposed to the new style of learning which is more hands-on and practical than what they are used to at school.”
