Hodnett House celebrates Easter with fun activities

The owner of Hodnett House, Margo Hodnett, said celebrating Easter helps the beneficiaries learn more about the world around them.

In Linden, the spirit of Easter filled Hodnett House, a daycare facility catering to individuals living with intellectual disabilities. Under the guidance of Margot Hodnett, the centre transformed into the Easter Bunny’s garden, with activities designed to embrace the joy of the season.

Members of Hodnett House took part in different activities related to Easter.

The Easter activity programme was created in a way that accommodates several intellectual disabilities to include every participant. “The beneficiaries at Hodnett House had loads of fun baking Easter sugar cookies in the shape of bunnies, chickens, and eggs and decorating them to fill the beautiful baskets they spent the past week making and decorating,” shared Hodnett, beaming with pride. “Once all the cookies were made, Easter eggs were hidden in the garden for the much-anticipated Easter Egg Hunt.”

For Hodnett, Easter represents more than just a holiday—it’s an opportunity for the beneficiaries to delve into the traditions and celebrations that define communities. “Easter is just one of the many themes run at Hodnett House for the beneficiaries to learn about the world around them and the different festivals we celebrate as a community,” she explained.

The participants baked Easter themed cookies.

“The different themes typically incorporate learning new words in South African Sign Language, singing new songs, and playing new games,” Hodnett added. “These activities are designed to be fun and easy to learn for both high and low-functioning adults alike.”

Among the participants was Lauren Bird, a member of Hodnett House. Bird expressed her joy, saying, “I spent Easter at Hodnett House and it was very fun. Everybody enjoyed it and I will be going to church on Good Friday. I love Easter the Easter Bunny and would like to wish everybody a happy Easter.”

Hodnett House participants created baskets to carry their Easter eggs.

Another participant, Michael Smith, said that he learned a lot about the Easter season. “I learned about Good Friday and Palm Sunday. We had an Easter Egg hunt and I enjoyed it. It was really fun.”
