Randburg SPCA seeks help after break-in and theft

After a recent theft, the Randburg SPCA is appealing for community assistance to improve security measures and protect its staff and animals from future incidents.

The SPCA faces serious security concerns following a recent theft that saw valuable vehicle parts and significant damage to the facility’s perimeter fence.

The theft was discovered when SPCA inspector Theo Mahube prepared to respond to a call and noticed that his spare wheel and wheel caps were missing. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, the team spotted a suspect running off with the stolen items just after 20:00 on the night of the incident.

To assess the extent of the damage, general manager Kaylie Henderson conducted a perimeter check and found that the fence had been broken in three places. This breach has heightened safety concerns for both staff members, who reside on the premises, and the animals in their care.

This is not the first time the SPCA has been targeted. The organisation has previously experienced incidents where its fence was either cut or broken, allowing intruders to access the property unlawfully.

Despite having CCTV cameras, an alarm system, and staff members on-site, financial limitations prevent the organisation from investing in additional security measures, such as infrared beams or barbed wire fencing.

“To ensure the safety of our animals and staff, we would love to add barbed wire along the front of the property, or install security beams,” said Cynthia Swanepoel, emphasising the urgency of the situation.

While the SPCA is working with insurance to recover from the loss, they are also reaching out to the community for assistance in securing the property.

“If anyone can assist us, we would be incredibly grateful,” Swanepoel stated. “We have farm animals that are at great risk, and we need help securing the property, either through barbed wire or security beams.”

Members of the community, or businesses, willing to contribute towards improving the SPCA’s security infrastructure are encouraged to come forward and offer assistance.
