IIE-Vega Bordeaux campus hosts orientation week for first years
It was a strong start for first year students entering IIE-Vega Bordeaux campus as they experienced life on campus, as well as fun activities, during orientation week.
The jump from high school to tertiary studies is a big one, but for first year Independent Institute of Education (IIE)-Vega Bordeaux campus students, orientation week (o’week) made the transition an exciting and welcoming experience.
Designed to set students up for success and to introduce them to campus life, o’week, hosted in February, was packed with engaging social events, academic inductions, and support sessions.

Students connected with their peers through creative challenges and social events on and off campus, while also familiarising themselves with the school’s academic programmes and campus resources. They were introduced to the Student Wellness Navigator and Student Relations Navigators (SRN) – key support figures for mental health, student counselling, and academic queries at IIE-Vega.

Shaina Matthew, of the Student Wellness Navigator, noticed that the biggest challenges first year students often experience are anxiety and depression. “The main contributing factor is a lack of a sense of belonging, following the transition from high school to tertiary studies. Students are now on their own for the first time and are still struggling to adjust.”
She asked students what their biggest fears were, surrounding campus life. The common responses were: ‘What if I fail, what if I don’t meet my parents’ expectations, what if I don’t belong, and what if I don’t make friends?’
Matthew, who is currently reading towards her doctorate in social work, said that, through her research, she will be surveying students across all IIE campuses, and from her findings, she is planning on creating counselling guidelines for students who struggle with anxiety and depression.

One of the standout moments of o’week was the creative challenge: The V-Race, which resembled the television series The Amazing Race. The objective was to get to know the campus, each other, and to help others. ‘Speed dating’ sessions also allowed students from different programmes to network and connect.
Off campus events, such as the visit to Mzansi Happy Island Theme Park and the sports social at Old Parks Sports Club, were highlights for many.

“My favourite part of o’week was making new friends and getting acquainted with the campus. I’m also most excited about elevating my career,” said Senna Bartrum, a first year IIE Bachelor of Experience Design.
By the end of the week, students felt prepared for the year ahead, equipped with the tools and connections to succeed in their first year of tertiary studies.
