Randburg SPCA appeals for urgent food donations

Facing rising costs and more animals in need, the Randburg SPCA is urging locals to help with food, funds, or items for their charity shops.

When food supplies run low, the animals feel it first, but so does the dedicated team members at the Randburg SPCA. Caring for around 150 dogs and cats, as well as rescued farm animals, the organisation is once again asking for help from the community.

“We never turn anyone away, even when we’re overwhelmed,” said Cynthia Swanepoel, kennel manager at the Randburg SPCA. “We make a plan, because food is non-negotiable.”

The Randburg SPCA faces growing pressure as bills pile up and more neglected or abandoned animals arrive, many in poor health. “When a starving or injured animal comes through our doors, and we don’t have the right food or medicine, the worry sets in fast,” Swanepoel explained.

Beyond food and vet care, the team also works hard to keep animals mentally and emotionally healthy. “Those stuck in kennels for a long time need extra attention. It’s not just about survival, we want them to thrive.”

Donations of any kind are welcome. These can be bags of dog or cat food, grass for the goats, or even old furniture and clothing for their charity shops. “Every item helps. It all goes back into feeding and caring for the animals,” Swanepoel said.

Sterilisation remains a major focus, and the organisation urges pet owners to think carefully before adopting. “If you can’t afford to keep a pet, please think twice. Abandoned animals land up here, and we’re already stretched,” she added.

Still, the team remains hopeful. “You don’t have to do everything, but if everyone does something, we can keep going. A small act of kindness, whether it’s food, time, or even just spreading the word, can change everything for an animal in need.”

To donate, residents are urged to use the following banking details:

Account: SPCA Randburg
Bank: FNB Northgate
Branch Code: 256 755
Account Number: 62680408012

Donations can be dropped off at 229 Northumberland Avenue, Northriding, Randburg.
