Johannesburg residents encouraged to report reckless driving

Six years after its launch, the JMPD’s WhatsApp hotline continues to empower residents to report dangerous driving and by-law infringements.

Since its introduction in 2019, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) WhatsApp-based hotline has become an essential tool in the fight against reckless driving and other by-law violations across the city. The initiative was launched on March 27, 2019, with the goal of making it easier for residents to report unsafe road behaviour and assist authorities in maintaining order.

The platform allows residents to upload photos or videos of offending vehicles, including their registration numbers and relevant details, along with a brief description of the incident, such as the date, time, and location. Importantly, reports can be made anonymously, with complainants providing their contact details only if they choose to do so, but evidence must be captured personally, by the reporter, to ensure credibility and legal validity. Complainants should also be prepared to testify, if required, during legal proceedings.

The JMPD reviews each submission, analysing the evidence and taking appropriate action, which may include forwarding cases to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for prosecution. The initiative aims to curb dangerous driving behaviours that continue to threaten road safety in Johannesburg, with reckless driving and driving under the influence remaining top transgressions.

The dedicated WhatsApp number for reporting is: 081 410 6338. While the hotline remains a vital channel, residents can still report voice complaints directly to JMPD via phone at: (011) 375 5911.

Six years on, the WhatsApp hotline remains a crucial component in Johannesburg’s efforts to promote safer roads, encouraging community participation in law enforcement and helping to reduce accidents caused by negligent driving. The city continues to rely on the co-operation of its residents to uphold road safety and enforce municipal regulations effectively.
