St Stithians learner wins Karri prize, helps 4Paws

St Stithians student Liam Farren used his Karri Card competition winnings to support 4Paws, an animal shelter that helps abandoned cats and dogs.

A Grade 6 learner from St Stithians Boys’ Preparatory, Liam Farren, has won one of three monthly R1 000 prizes in the national Karri Card competition, using the opportunity to give back to a cause close to his heart.

Each month, Karri Card rewards three lucky learners from across South Africa with R1 000 cash, which is loaded onto their Karri Cards. Winners are also given a chance to donate an extra R1 000 to a charity of their choice.

Liam, along with learners from Kingsmead College and Curro Brackenfell in Cape Town, were chosen as one of the winners this month. Liam decided to support 4Paws, an animal shelter based in the greater Fourways area that cares for injured, abandoned, and mistreated cats and dogs.

The shelter currently looks after 49 dogs and over 100 cats, providing food, love, shelter and medical care. One of their dogs, Max, only has three legs but lives a happy life thanks to the care of Monique Russouw, 4Paws founder, Doctor, and the rest of the 4Paws team.

This week, Liam proudly handed over a large Karri Card donation voucher worth R1 000 to Russouw and Doctor at the shelter. Russouw expressed her appreciation, saying: “I am so impressed Liam chose to support us. Being a smaller animal shelter, we don’t get as much support as better-known shelters receive. We need all the help we can get, and are so grateful. Thank you, Liam and Karri, for choosing us.”

When asked why he picked 4Paws, Liam said: “I love animals, especially cats and dogs. I wanted to find a charity that helps to protect cats, dogs, and all animals.”

Liam also shared his favourite thing to buy using his Karri Card at the Saints Café: “A mince and cheese tramezzini.” He added that the Karri Card is also a great way to pay for things during school trips, like the rugby tour.

Lauren Pitman, head of marketing at Karri, said: “It was so rewarding to see Liam hand over his donation to 4Paws. A big thank you to St Stithians School and all the Saints boys and girls who swipe their Karri Cards at the tuckshop, shops, mall, or wherever. We are so proud to have such young, passionate people managing their rands wisely, and helping us to build a money-savvy generation of students.”

Karri Card continues to encourage smart money choices while teaching young people the value of giving back, and Liam’s actions are proof of just that.
