City Power attends to shocking situation in Randpark Ridge

City Power has attended and fixed the high volt issue that was causing shocks for Randpark Ridge residents when using showers.

City Power confirmed that they have attended to and fixed the electrical shock issue experienced by residents in Randpark Ridge, specifically in complexes including Villa Divane, Villa Limar, Escada Estate, and surrounding areas.

Residents have been experiencing an electrical current flowing through their taps for over two months. The issue was reported to City Power, who visited a few houses but were unable to resolve the problem. Some residents have had electricians inspecting the electrical circuits for a solution.

Resident Denise van Wyk explained that, firstly, she thought it was only her house that was experiencing the problem. “We weren’t talking to other residents, we were doing our own investigations per unit. It’s not all the units in the complex affected, which is the weirdest thing.”

Van Wyk was struggling to use her shower, relying on a plastic back scratcher or dry cloth to open and close her shower. “You can’t shower freely. It’s about 14 volts or more, sometimes it’s quite bad. It’s a shock and sometimes it’s like a tingle in your hand. When you’re wet and you’re standing in the shower, you can feel it.”

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that the teams were alerted to the matter and responded promptly. Technicians were dispatched to conduct a detailed inspection of the affected properties and surrounding electrical infrastructure.

City Power conducted a full technical investigation and identified a fault related to the earthing and neutral system in the supply network. Corrective measures were implemented, which included testing and verifying the integrity of earth connections within the area.

“Technicians confirmed the restoration of safe supply conditions following the repair,” said Mangena. “The safety and well-being of our customers remains our top priority, and our teams remain on standby to respond urgently to any similar faults reported across the city. The matter was treated as urgent due to the potential safety hazard.”

Mangena further stated that any future incidents of a similar nature will continue to receive high priority. They remain committed to ensuring that all faults, especially those posing a danger to human life, are swiftly attended to. “These are often caused by faults in the electrical earthing system. Specifically, this may involve a broken earth or a neutral conductor fault, resulting in stray voltage being transferred to metallic components, such as taps or pipes. Environmental factors, such as recent rain or nearby electrical surges, may worsen the situation. In residential complexes, poor internal wiring or lack of bonding between water pipes and the earth system can also contribute to such hazards.”

City Power advised residents never to touch taps, water pipes, or electrical appliances if they suspect an electric shock, especially when standing barefoot or with wet hands. Instead, they should stay clear of the affected area and report the issue for urgent attention.
