Alliance Learners Transport Association meets to discuss progress and elect new executive committee
Alliance Learners Transport Association announced the newly elected executive committee and discussed the organisation's progress.
Members of the Alliance Learners Transport Association in Region B gathered at the Randburg Fire Station to discuss the organisation’s progress and select new leaders.
The scholar transport association, registered under Gauteng Education Transport Services (GETS), was formed in March 2023 to address the concerns and challenges that the drivers in Region B face. They also ensure that their members are responsible for the learners, and that their vehicles are in roadworthy condition. They’ve also done training that covers basic firefighting, first aid, and road safety with the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) community outreach departments.

Alliance secretary Bonisiwe Mkhonza explained that the scholar transport operators need to fall under an association to be able to transport kids. “The purpose, basically, is to have all the local drivers in Region B under one association, where we can have a voice, be presented and be counted in the government as well.”
She said that the association has actually grown beyond what they thought it would. “Our goals… We were able to obtain them. It’s working well for us. If one of us is in an incident, we assist, because we are part of one association.”

Mkhonza added that the event was a success, with members voting for the new executive committee in a democratically free and fair manner that everyone agreed on. “It was not a just a meeting; it was an election and announcement of the new executive committee. Other stakeholders that were involved and helped out were the GETS regional office, Provincial Executive Committee, and the Department of Roads and Transport.”

Chris Viviers, community educator at the Randburg Besafe Centre, works closely with the alliance. He said that it is good to have them learning more, and that they’re always willing to have safety trainings. “We will conduct refresher courses for those who were part of the training last year. The JMPD will also come in to teach the drivers what to do if they’re involved in accidents.”
