Beagle Watch patrol catches cable thieves

Two cable theft suspects were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday after Beagle Watch officers found them hiding inside an open manhole in Bordeaux.

Two suspects were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning after being found with stolen cables in Bordeaux.

According to Beagle Watch area manager David Caseiro, the incident took place at about 03:53 on January 13, at the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Main Street.

Beagle Watch officers David Mashau and Jacob Shebi were on routine patrol when they noticed suspicious behaviour involving several individuals on the street. When the officers approached, the suspects fled the scene.

The officers then checked a nearby manhole and found it open, with two suspects hiding inside. The suspects were instructed to come out, and stolen cables were discovered at the scene.

Three cut cables were found inside a recycle bag on a trolley, while a further 12 cut cables were recovered from inside the manhole. In total, 15 pieces of cut cable were recovered. Tools believed to have been used to cut the cables were also found.

Police were contacted, and members from Randburg SAPS arrived on the scene. The two suspects were arrested and taken to the Randburg Police Station. Four other suspects managed to escape before police arrived.

Caseiro said cable theft has been reported in the same area before, with a similar arrest having been made last year. He added that Beagle Watch continues to patrol the area and closely monitor manholes and suspicious vehicles often linked to cable theft.
