Highway Exchange, a business park in Strydom Park, has had no water for the past two weeks, as technicians from the City of Johannesburg were not able to restore the supply due to a missing key required to open the water valves.
The water had been cut off due to a misunderstanding in the billing arrangement that the business park has with the City of Johannesburg. The issue was solved, but now the water supply remains off due to the missing key.
The issue stems from a billing discourse that dates back to 2020, when the former owners left an outstanding bill. Heath Hargreaves, an employee at one of the businesses at Highway Exchange, said the present owners had made an arrangement with the City of Johannesburg to pay the debt.

Hargreaves stated that the water cuts usually happen when the City of Johannesburg appoints a new credit controller because they would not know about the arrangement between Highway Exchange and the city.
Luke Fisher, a member of the Highway Exchange board, explained that Johannesburg Water has been on site twice to turn the water on. However, they did not have the correct key to open the valve. He added that the water supply interruption is seriously affecting the businesses within the Highway Exchange. “We cannot run any businesses without water efficiently. We just need our water turned on.”
Questions were sent to Johannesburg Water to get a comment about the missing key and the ongoing water interruption. However, Randburg Sun has not received any response. It will be published once it is made available.
