Johannesburg Children’s Choir for Randburg
The choir is auditioning for members and aspiring singers in the area at the moment
Elana Neethling, a choir conductor with a stellar career spanning 24 years and 35 as a distinguished chorister, is establishing a new regional choir called the Johannesburg Children’s Choir.
Neethling said she realised there was a need for a choir in Johannesburg after she moved from Pretoria. The choir will rehearse at the Domus Dei church in Blairgowrie.
“I felt that the choir community was not as developed as in Pretoria. It started to pick up as recently there have been a few developments in the choir world with new adults and youth choirs coming to life but there are no children’s choirs outside of schools.”

The choir will cater for children from the age of nine to 14 which is her favourite age to work with. “You get children that you can hear that there is talent but is not as developed yet, then to see the progress that they make throughout the time you work with them is amazing.”
Neethling is currently holding auditions at local schools. “It is going to be community-based, with children from all over Randburg and other areas from different schools and backgrounds.”

The choir will sing at the three-evening series with Jo Black in April next year and possibly at the Aardklop Kunstefees. In future, Neethling wants the choir to sing in international choir competitions.
In her 24 years of experience, she has conducted various primary school, high school, and adult choirs. Her choirs participate annually in the ATKV-Applous Choir Competition and for the past three years, her Laerskool Unika Junior Choir was the overall winner in the Randburg region. The choir also won the Junior Choir category in the Con Spiritu National Choir Competition.
While serving as the conductor for Loreto School Queenswood choir, they competed in the 2018 World Choir Games held in South Africa, earning a gold medal in their category.
