From 7 to 258 learners: Kingsway Christian School turns 40
Kingsway Christian School marks four decades of encouraging young minds. While financial limitations mean that celebration is optional, the school’s love and dedication to the community remain.
Kingsway Christian School started in 1986 with a small group of seven children gathered in a garage; these children were the first learners of what would become Kingsway Christian School.
In 1990, the school officially opened in its current location in Randpark Ridge, accommodating learners from disadvantaged backgrounds from Zandspruit. And now, 40 years later, the school continues to provide quality education, incorporating academic greatness with a beautiful and supportive environment.

Kingsway has been more than a school to its learners; it has been a home where dreams are nurtured. Principal Kgethi Dlamini said that even though there will not be a big celebration, they might do a little something.

“We are looking at a possible cultural day, where we will have a marimba band from another school, and they will bring their Zulu dancers as part of the celebration,” she said.
As a subsidised independent school, Kingsway relies on government subsidies, which cover 60% of its costs, while the other 40% comes from school fees and fundraising. To ensure they still get the support from the government, the school must continue producing great academic performances. “So, to achieve this, we created a beautiful environment that is conducive to learning,” said Dlamini.

Staff members have also played an important role in keeping the school going. Treasure Ngcube, who started selling sweets, chips and fat cakes outside the school in 1995, describes her connection with the school in a way that put her in a position as a guardian for the children. She mentioned that when the principal at the time would tell the learners to come with a parent the next day, the learners would ask her to represent them. As time went by, Ngcube got employed at the school as a cleaner and cook and is still there.

Kim Maritz, the school secretary, expressed how she feels about the school turning 40 this year. “I am so very proud because this is truly a school where legacies have been left for all of us to continue, and if you think of where we started and how we started and where we are today, it has truly been a miracle and a gift from God,” she stated.
Kingsway Christian School has kept its mission of ensuring that children from disadvantaged backgrounds get a good quality education, despite the financial challenges it has faced over 40 years.
