1st Randburg Scouts achieve second place at Gauteng Kon-Tiki competition

The 1st Randburg Scouts were second overall at the annual Kon-Tiki Gauteng competition, despite being the smallest group.

The 1st Randburg Scouts proudly secured second place overall at the annual Kon-Tiki Gauteng competition held in Benoni.

The Kon-Tiki Scout competition is a premier outdoor event where troops build pioneering rafts using barrels, poles, and ropes without nails or screws. The event, in Benoni, attracted scout troops from across the region, all competing in a challenging test of scouting skills, teamwork, creativity, and endurance.

The competition consisted of two main sections: The land competition and the raft competition. In the land competition, scouts were required to use ropes and poles to design and construct impressive pioneering projects. Teams were also judged in a cooking competition, where they demonstrated their ability to prepare meals while maintaining hygiene, organisation, and teamwork.

The raft competition required each troop to build a raft capable of accommodating eight people. The scouts then lived and worked from their rafts during the event, putting their construction skills and teamwork to the test.

Overall results were determined by combining the scores from both the land and raft sections.
1st Randburg Scouts group leader Lindsay Engelbrecht explained that their troops delivered an outstanding performance, particularly in the land competition, where their pioneering project and cooking skills impressed the judges and earned them second place. “When I look at them, not only as Scouts, but as young humans, I am extremely proud, because it means that whatever they’re learning and experiencing here they’re taking out into our society.”
