Hillfox outpaces Northgate Falcons in Junior Super League netball

Falcons coach Llewellyn Lundell urges his squad to master the basics and drive into defender contact as fatigue takes its toll.

Hillfox B rallied in the second half of their netball fixture to secure a 34–16 Junior Super League victory over the Northgate Falcons U16B team.

The Falcons held their own in the first half at Northgate Action Sports on October 3, and went into the break level with their opponents, but after the interval, Hillfox lifted their game and pulled away.

Falcons coach Llewellyn Lundell felt speed made the difference as his side slipped on the basics and lost its edge. “We dropped our level and Hillfox B raised their level,” said Lundell. “They did perform to a higher intensity than us.

“I do believe that they were a lot faster than us and that’s what let us down, but also because we kind of just forgot the basics.”

Despite the result, he took heart from the first half and has told his players they are capable of winning. “Because we were level at halftime, I’ve told the girls now that they can win it,” he said. “They just need to keep their heads in the game.”

Lundell said the team’s effort over most of the match gives them a positive base to build on as the super league season nears its end.

He said one area to work on is driving to collect the ball. When players tire, they tend to throw long balls, which defenders find easy to intercept. “What I want them to do is drive in front of their defenders, let the defenders contact them, so then they get the ball,” Lundell said. “Rather than try and throw the ball over the defenders.”

Lundell added that the team’s passing also needs to be tidier, noting that tiredness played a part in the loss. “At least we know what to work on for the next week,” Lundell said.
