Curro Aurora robotics teacher to judge at World Robotics Olympiad in Germany

Teacher to represent his school, and country, in robotics event in Dortmund.

Curro Aurora is proud to send its IT and robotics teacher, Peet Steyn off to participate in a prestigious robotics event in Germany.

Steyn was introduced to robotics as a subject in 2015 when he started teaching at Curro Heuwelkruin.

At that point, robotics was taught by a colleague.

Computer Sciences was one of Steyn’s main focus subjects at university and he felt drawn to the subject content.

“The problem-solving skills, coupled with the coding and building skills interested me a lot and I knew at that point that this is the subject I wanted to teach,” he said.

Three years later the bright lights of the city called him to Johannesburg where he is appointed to teach Information Technology at Curro Aurora.

He thoroughly enjoyed the subject and when the opportunity presented itself to move to a new position where he could teach Information Technology and Robotics, he knew that he could not let this opportunity go by.

Under the guidance of Edwin Astle, his subject head, Steyn grew and became more proficient in the subject. This was where things changed and was asked to participate as a provincial judge for the Gauteng South World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) competition. Steyn was invited to be a nationals judge in 2019 at the Dome where the competition was part of the rAge Expo.

In 2020 Covid hit, and everything came to a standstill and all competitions came to a halt. During Covid Steyn participated as a judge at the 2021 WRO 2020-X, in Canada. In 2022 after Covid the competition resumed and after participating as a judge in the provincials and nationals WRO competition he was asked to participate as a judge at the 2022 WRO competition to be held in Dortmund, Germany.

Over 85 countries worldwide participate in this competition. The competition is designed by a committee and a worldwide challenge is then rolled out. The challenge consists of a set number of tasks that the participants need to complete in the shortest amount of time. There are four categories: Robomission, robosports, future innovators and future engineers.
