Super 6-A-Side at Old Parks Soccer Club

BORDEAUX – Old Parks Soccer Club's annual tournament a success despite pullouts amid coronavirus fears.

It was goals galore at Old Parks Soccer Club’s annual 6-A-Side Soccer Tournament.

The main field was busy all of 14 and 15 March as boys and girls between the ages of six and 12 played their hearts out in front of a crowd of friends, family and teammates cheering them on.

Only the U12 and U13 matches were competitive and had results officially recorded. Nevertheless, the youngest players could teach their seniors a thing or two about never giving up and always trying your best.

In the end, Warriors won both the U11 and U12 divisions, with Wits the runners-up in U12s and Bryanston Warriors runners up in U11s.

Due to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech about curtailing the spread of coronavirus, and South African Football Association’s adherence to his instructions, Old Parks will not host any soccer until at least mid-April.

“We even had three teams pull out of the tournament on the Sunday morning, and a few the week before, but we made the tournament a success,” said Old Parks director of coaching, Gary Roodt.

“The organising committee ensured everything still ran smoothly and wherever there was a gap, it was filled.”

Old Parks was meant to have a women’s and girls section at the tournament but it had to be cancelled due to teams pulling out because of coronavirus fears.

As it is, the club would have been in pre-season training and hosting the odd friendly match now if it were not for the situation.

The women’s and girls’ teams were meant to start playing on 21 March, and the men and boys would have done pre-season until the season kicked off in 18 April.
