Diggers Rugby Club looks forward to new season
Diggers Rugby Club senior team players are excited for the coming season participating in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge.

After a brilliant season in 2024, Diggers Rugby Club senior team has begun the preparations for the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge (PGC).
Diggers dominated the Castle Lager Senior Grand Challenge (SGC) in 2024 and gained promotion to the PGC. The PGC is the pinnacle of club rugby in Gauteng. It’s incredibly competitive, full of top sides and universities, and will be a challenge Diggers are looking forward too.
Andrew Collison, Diggers chairperson, explained that in the new season their goal is to try and end mid table on balance of score card, meaning across the five teams that play, they hope to cumulatively finish mid table.
He also confirmed that there will be new faces joining the team to strengthen it in the coming season.
“We have seen a lot of interest since moving to PGC, and we also have a large group of U18s joining us from our own junior section, which is super exciting. We believe we can truly accommodate a wide variety of players as a true community club, and welcome any and all new players seeking to level up their game.”
The competition will be the toughest they ever faced in over a decade, with some of the best clubs in the league playing for gold cup status.
Collison said that their approach will be similar to how they apply the club’s culture of hard work and dedication, but they will definitely be adding some new levels to their play as the league will require a higher rugby intelligence quotient (IQ). “I know the players are super excited for the challenge, but the step up is really quite significant. It really is another level all together.”
He added that, besides the first session being rained out, their preparations are going well with great turnouts so far and a very productive off-season.
“They look ready to begin the hard work ahead. Some have done some good off-season work and look prepared. We have lined up three good testing pre-season friendlies with local clubs, and some outside of our union, as well as trials on February 15.”
Collison concluded that they have not selected players that will be registered to the senior team as yet.
“Right now, no one has their position, that’s the joy of pre-season. Players will be promoted on merit and that will come down to practice attendance and skills shown, as well as showing the values we hold dear at Diggers.”
