Rhinos run riot in stunning 64–0 display

Rhinos third team coach Simon Matidza had a simple message for his players before kick-off, and a 64–0 victory was the result.

The Rhinos third team put on a stunning display to thrash their opponents, Diggers, 64–0, with coach Simon Matidza saying afterwards that his boys simply did what they do best, play their game and enjoy themselves.

It was not always plain sailing. The first half was a nervy affair, with Rhinos struggling to find their rhythm early on, but Matidza kept his composure on the touchline, and his players responded in kind when it mattered most.

“The first half was a bit shaky, but in the second half we came up and showed them how we play our game.”

The coach has built a culture at the club around enjoyment and self-expression, and that philosophy was on full display on the day. Rather than burdening his players with tactical demands, Matidza preferred to keep things straightforward.

“I always tell them: ‘Guys, come here and have fun. Just play our game, what the Rhinos are made of’.”

At halftime, with the scoreboard already telling a clear story, Matidza resisted the urge to overcomplicate things.

He told his players to go out, give everything they had, and make the most of the final 35 minutes. “The most important thing is just to enjoy yourselves and shine your talent here.”

On the other side of the result, opposing coach Gerdus Jacobs cut a proud figure, despite the scoreline. His third team had faced a tough week leading into the match, having come up against a strong Randfontein side the weekend before, and he felt his players had shown real character in difficult circumstances.

“We had a tough game today, but we’re very proud of the contenders. They showed some heart.”

He was particularly encouraged by the progress his side made from one week to the next, believing the performance pointed to a team that was growing together.

“We put up a good fight against them, so we’re very proud of our guys. We showed great improvement from last weekend.”
