MOVIE REVIEW: The Heat
Reader Craig Steyn reviews new action comedy film The Heat on behalf of looklocal Randburg and Ster-kinekor Northgate.

GENRE: Action comedy
RUNNING TIME: 117 minutes
STARRING: Sandra Bullock (Miss Congeniality), Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids)
DIRECTED BY: Paul Feig (Bridesmaids)
Currently screening at Ster-kinekor Northgate.
PLOT: When stuck up FBI agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) is sent to Boston to hunt down a major drug lord, she partners up with violent foul mouthed detective Shannon Mullins (McCarthy). Ashburn’s rigid philosophies clash with Mullins’ rough and fierce style of police work.
THE GOOD: The story line is great, as are the actors. The unlikely combination of a by-the-book agent and a crazy detective makes for a hilarious show.
THE BAD: The movie is too long and there is too much profanity. McCarthy’s character is extremely vulgar and comes across as fascist and offensive.
VERDICT: The Heat is a funny movie which Melissa McCarthy takes to a whole new level. Sandra Bullock portrays a stuck up FBI agent very well. The movie does drag on a little bit, but the laughs you get make up for it. When it comes to action, there isn’t that much of it but it’s enough to keep you interested. Without the profanity it could have been a very good movie and McCarthy’s character could have been toned down a bit. What with all the foul language, one wonders if they stuck it in to make up for a somewhat weak script. Some will find it funny and some won’t. I would rather wait for it to arrive on DVD than to sit in the cinema to watch it.
