MOVIE REVIEW: Grudge Match

Randburg reader Dylan Els reviews new sports comedy Grudge Match on behalf of the Randburg Sun and Ster Kinekor Northgate.

GENRE: Sports comedy

RUNNING TIME: 1 hour 53 minutes

STARRING: Robert De Niro (Meet the Fockers), Sylvester Stallone (The Expendables), Kevin Hart (Think like a Man)

DIRECTED BY: Peter Segal (Get Smart)

RATING: 6/10

Currently screening at Ster-Kinekor Northgate.

PLOT: Two 1980s boxing rivals, Henry ‘Razor’ Sharp (Sylvester Stallone) and Billy ‘The Kid’ McDonnen (Robert De Niro) are asked by Dante Slate (Kevin Hart) if they can appear in an ultimate come-back match, or ‘Grudge match’ to break a tie from 30 years ago, to determine who is the better boxer. Now, in the 21st century, they must get back into shape and earn their fame back, in their old age. They market the boxing match between the two champions as a ’60+ match’. Will the two be able fight with all challenges involved? The final question though, is who will win?

THE GOOD: The film involved good humour throughout, from all parts. Grudge Match is in a league of its own.

THE BAD: The story never kept me on the edge of my seat and wasn’t really emphasising the excitement of the final match, where as it emphasised the problems it caused. That was disappointing as the lacking ‘fun’, so to speak, actually the plot.

VERDICT: Even though there are several flaws in this film, it still is worth watching, even more than once. So if you’re looking for a sports comedy this is your perfect movie. Definitely worth a ticket price, and maybe even worthy of buying on DVD in the future!
