LETTER: Northway Road saga: Resident praises councillor for stepping in
Resident writes a letter thanking the local ward councillor who has officially expressed his concern about heavy-duty trucks driving on residential roads.

A big thanks to the councillor for Ward 9 Tewie Botha and his comments regarding heavy-duty trucks making use of residential roads in and around Randfontein.
I especially want to highlight Northway Road in Greenhills which is used by thousands of school learners.
These trucks are out of control, speeding and driving right through the stop streets even as the kids try and cross the road.

The municipality blithely stated that Northway Road was the only access that 50 to 80 trucks (plus chemical tankers) had to the CBD.
How many business owners want 50 tons of loose grain or a tanker loaded with toxic chemicals delivered to their front door?
Not many I think.

For everyone’s information, the municipality has been bombarded with e-mails, urging them to address the matter and force truck drivers to stop using Northway Road as a shortcut for some time now.
I further suspect that these heavy-duty trucks are encouraged to use residential roads irrespective.
