OPINION: Tasking our municipality a bad choice

The resident strongly doubts if the province made the right decision to task Rand West City Local Municipality with being responsible for addressing the sewer network project across Gauteng.

• Wonder Modise from the Bekkersdal People’s Parliament writes:

Having read the article with the headline Rand West now in charge of unblocking province’s sewer network despite its own backyard in decay online, l became very worried.

Unless the province is not well informed, there are numerous sewer and water-related challenges or problems in Rand West City, including what has happened in Dan Hlome and Bekkersdal in particular.

Today (August 19) in Bekkersdal, the main contractor responsible for the sewer project rehabilitation project is a mess.

The main contractor and the municipality told us at a public meeting they do not have a scope of work.

The project at the moment is like politicians milking a cash cow which the ratepayer feeds. They want to blame the community for stopping or pausing the project when they rejected our proposal.

However, the Rand West City Local Municipality Mayor, William Matsheke, expressed enthusiasm about the new role saying, “We are excited about the opportunity to steer this crucial initiative. Addressing sewer spillages and improving infrastructure across the province is a significant responsibility.” — Ed.
