Gauteng MEC for Finance Mandla Nkomfe together with the Westonaria Executive Mayor NonkolisoTundzi will be hosting a Career Expo at the Westonaria Banquet Hall on 27 June.
The purpose of the expo will be to serve as a platform for tertiary and youth development institutions to showcase the opportunities they have to offer in terms of youth upliftment.
According to Nkomfe, the career expo is a method of fighting the lack of information as well as the lack of resources to access information among the youth that continues to hamper progress in societies .
“We have a lot of opportunities that the youth can take advantage of but in most cases, we have discovered that they are not aware of these opportunities owing to the lack of resources.
“Due to such challenges, we are partnering with institutions like the National Youth Development Agency, WITS University , Vaal University of Technology, the Gauteng Film Commission and many other,” says Nkomfe.
At the expo, learners will be addressed on ways to obtain information as well given career guidance.
They will also be addressed by the latest Idols winner and songster Khaya Mthethwa.
According to Mthethwa, he has always been passionate about youth development and wishes to make waves in changing mindsets.
“I love sharing my story with young people in the hope that they will be inspired by it,” says Mthethwa
“The youth of 1976 in Soweto fought long and hard against a system that was oppressive and undemocratic and we have what we have today because of them.
“The current generation faces different challenges of combating poverty, unemployment, HIV and Aids, economic freedom and personal development hence the emphasis on job creation and youth employment,” says Nkomfe.
