R3 000 bail for accused in George and Benns kidnapping and murder case

The two young accused in the George and Benns murder and kidnapping case have been released on bail, with the matter postponed to the end of July as investigations continue.

The two accused in the high-profile murder and kidnapping case of Ashley George (21) and Fazel Benns (16) have been granted bail by the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, June 4.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s communications officer, Magaboke Mohlatlole, the accused, aged 18 and 15, each received bail set at R3 000.

The matter has now been postponed to July 28 for further investigation.

The case stems from a February incident in which George and Benns were allegedly kidnapped and taken to an informal settlement near the Toekomsrus dumping site, where they were attacked.

George was killed at the scene, while Benns is still missing and feared dead after both victims were allegedly thrown into a mine shaft.

The two accused were arrested in March after being handed over to police by their parents and have since made several court appearances as the legal process unfolded.

Previous court proceedings saw multiple postponements of the bail application to allow for further investigation, preparation, and verification of information presented to the court.

The case continues to draw strong community interest, with residents closely following developments as the matter progresses through the courts.
