Two R’fontein butcheries among SA’s best

Ziman Meats and Tony’s Meat Market receive prestigious awards.

The country’s best butcheries both nationally and regionally were recently announced with Ziman Meats and Tony’s Meat Market, both in Randfontein, having both won Regional Cleaver Awards.

The Cleaver Awards, which are proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch, were launched ten years ago to meet the needs of the consumer by raising standards amongst butcheries.

These Awards have grown exponentially in nominations this year with over 30 000 nominations coming in from around South Africa.

Since these awards started, butchery standards have significantly improved and feedback from consumers shows that the majority perceive the Cleaver Awards to be a seal of approval.

“Without fail every major winner has thanked and given full credit for their success to their customers. These butchers listen to their customers and they know their customers’ names. They go out of their way to provide the customer with everything they want and more. These butchers deliver a level of customer service that others can only aspire to,” says Ryan Read, who has done research amongst butcheries over the last decade and who was the master of ceremonies at today’s prize giving.

“Most of all, though, to these winners the Cleaver Awards stands for the ultimate level of quality. It is the recognition of quality in everything they do,” he says.

An initiative of the South African Red Meat Industry Forum, these Awards acknowledge butcheries which meet consumer expectations on in-store hygiene, the supply of quality assured roller marked South African Beef, their level of competency in offering the best advice on meal preparations and perceived value for money.

Butchers were judged according to three categories namely;

  • Butcheries with four or more till points,
  • Butcheries with three or fewer till points and,
  • Food market / Supermarket butcheries

Nominations were opened towards the end of last year for consumers around the country to vote and nominate their best butchery.

The winners in each category received Platinum Awards and the runners up Gold Awards.
