Concerns over water wastage, hole outside RAM

Purified water flowing away for months outside RAM premises.

Management of Laerskool Randfontein (RAM) said the water leak outside their premises is a huge waste of a precious resource.

Annie Nolan, the school’s spokesperson said numerous efforts by the school to report the matter to council were all in vain.

Annie said the last time they reported the matter to the municipality was on Monday, 14 September, yet it has not been resolved.

The matter has even been reported to a local councillor as well. This is extremely concerning to us, as Gauteng has a serious water shortage.”

The problem has persisted for a few years, resulting in thousands of litres of water going to waste.

The school said the situation also poses a risks to learners of their school. Photo submitted.

She said although there was an attempt to seal off what looks like a leak, the problem became worse in the last three weeks as the hole that was dug was simply cordoned off.

“This is also putting our learners at a great risk, because they can fall into that hole.” Ellik de Lange, the DA councillor said he has documented the issue in photos and videos to submit to council, but hasn’t received any response.

It’s an issue that I’ve been battling with for the last two years. I’ve reported it again yesterday (Monday, 14 September),” Ellik said.

He said he hoped that the executive of the municipality would respond after he had flagged the matter as urgent.
