Councillor wages lonely war on water wastage

Gerald Samson, a Toekomsrus Ward 10 councillor said it is unacceptable that thousands of litres of precious water are going down the drain every day, without the municipality responding to his requests to have it attended to.

Gerald Samson, Toekomsrus Ward 10 councillor said despite numerous reports to relevant departments, his war on water leaks is far from over.

Samson, who has been battling to curb clean-water waste said the saga continues; he attributes the problem to the decaying infrastructure of Rand West City.

“You find clean water streaming down the roads, while some properties do not have water in their bathrooms,” Samson said.

He added that at times, people cannot even flush their toilets, as they have to use buckets to complete their ablutions. He emphasised that water is gradually becoming a scarce resource, and it’s painful to see thousands of litres go to waste every day.

He warned that the issue will affect the pockets of the municipality and its residents significantly.

“I always make sure that I escalate the issues to the relevant department, and I even go as far as sending those in charge photos to show them the extend of the problem, but there is never a response,” Samson said.

Some of them have even blocked him on WhatsApp, because he insisted that they look into the matter.

“This is not only a huge inconvenience to the households that do not have water, it also poses a risk, given that we are living in a Covid-19 pandemic and people are expected to practice good hygiene. How will they do that, if some of them do not have water in their homes?” he asked.

Having to ask neighbours for water, or use their bathrooms may also have certain implications amid the pandemic.

“This is truly unacceptable to say the least; this has to be made a priority, because people cannot carry on like this, especially while thousands of litres of precious water are going down the drain every day,” Samson lamented.
