Hullet Hild, 46, Democratic Alliance (DA) local elections candidate councillor for Ward 20 in Toekomsrus recently answered the Herald’s questions regarding the upcoming elections.
1. What have you done during your time in office?
I became a PR councillor on behalf of the DA in 2016 and found myself surrounded by a group of individuals who truly serve this city and its people.
The DA as the official opposition in Rand West City has been holding the current ANC administration to account to ensure that basic services get delivered to the residents of the city. We have used all council processes such as motions for debate, written questions and petitions in order to get things done. A petition for investigation of projects has also been delivered to the Public Protector.
I also serve as Caucus Leader of the DA and I am proud to say it is an easy task to lead this group of councillors who have coined a phrase we serve by, “all decisions must be in the best interest of all communities of this city”.
2. If you were elected, what would you focus on and why?
My number-one priority would be to ensure that basic services get delivered to the residents as soon as possible, especially our roads; and the electricity infrastructure must be upgraded due to continuous electricity outages.
3. Why should the community vote for you?
The Toekomsrus community know me and they saw what I could achieve whilst being a PR councillor, and I decided to stand as a candidate ward councillor. The provision of basic services is not a favour and it will be my responsibility to ensure that the residents get what they are entitled to.
4. Outside of your council duties, how are you involved in the community?
I am a member of the Men as Safety Promoters under the Department of Community Safety, but due to Covid-19 and related restrictions we could not launch. Hopefully it will happen soon.
5. What past experiences make you uniquely qualified for this role?
I have served the residents of this city as a PR councillor since 2016 and have been deployed to Bekkersdal and surrounding mine areas, Westergloor and Brandvlei.
During this deployments I gained valuable experiences both in council and as a community activist in general. I believe that the provision of basic services is not negotiable and I will ensure that it remains my number-one priority.
