More than 30 arrested in Bekkersdal operation

Police targeted criminal activities in the Bekkersdal area during their law-enforcement operation which yielded 34 arrests.

A total of 34 suspects were arrested by Bekkersdal Police during a law-enforcement operation held in the area between Friday 28 and Sunday January 30.

According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, suspects were arrested for offences such as dealing in dagga, robbery, theft out of motor vehicles, copper cable theft, intimidation, and malicious damage to property.

Police also clamped down on undocumented foreign nationals.

The focus of the operations was to deter criminals who operate around the Bekkersdal area, with the aim of rooting out illegal firearms and tracing those who are in the country illegally and believed to be perpetrators of crime around the informal settlement,” Sergeant Lefakane said.

All suspects will appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
