Two armed robbery suspects were injured during a shootout with police in Finsbury last Friday morning February 4.

The shootout came after four thugs had robbed a jewellery store in Carletonville that morning.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane, a third male suspect was arrested while the fourth managed to escape.

Captain Sebonyane explained, “Shortly after the robbery a lookout for a silver Nissan Almera was sent out on the police radio. The West Rand District Cash In Transit Unit then spotted the suspects’ vehicle on the R559 road between Carletonville and Randfontein. They tried to stop the vehicle but the suspects sped off.

When the suspects realised that the police were on their trail, they shot at them and a shootout ensued. The suspects lost control of the vehicle and two of them were shot and wounded, one surrendered and one managed to run away,” Captain Sebonyane said.

The two wounded suspects were taken to hospital for medical treatment where they were kept under police guard.

Other items that were recovered included cellphones, Wi-Fi routers, memory cards, USB flash drives, Go card machines and space-dyed throws.

One firearm was also recovered from the suspects and the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime was confiscated. The suspects will appear in the Oberholzer (Carletonville) Magistrates’ Court facing charges of business robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of stolen property and attempted murder,” Captain Sebonyane said.
