A 32-year-old man was arrested for raping and assaulting a 44-year-old woman late on Thursday night, March 3 in Silvercity, Bekkersdal.
According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the suspect was known to the victim.
She was walking home from a friend’s house when she was accosted by the man who allegedly hit her on the head with a beer bottle. He repeatedly assaulted her and forced himself on her,” Sergeant Lefakane said.
The matter was reported to the police and the man was traced and arrested eventually.
“He faces charges of rape and assault.”
Police further warned the community that alcohol abuse is an instigator of crime around the Bekkersdal area and urged people to refrain from behaviour that made them vulnerable to crime.
We’ve noticed that victims tend to stay at taverns until late at night and still move from place to place, opening themselves to crimes such as rape, robbery and even hijacking,” Sergeant Lefakane said.
