Taxi driver arrested for being three times over the blood-alcohol limit

Breathalyser indicated that the offender was three times over the legal limit at 1,24mg/1 000 ml.

A 36-year-old male taxi driver was arrested by the Gauteng Traffic Police for driving under the influence of alcohol during an operation in Carletonville on Monday May 16.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane, the man was arrested after the alcohol breathalyser recorded 1,24mg/1 000ml, which is three times over the prescribed legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000ml.

Maremane said the driver was detained at Carletonville Police Station and appeared in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning May 17 to face charges relating to driving recklessly and/ or negligently, with an alternative charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Driving under the influence of alcohol often results in impaired driving, causing unnecessary accidents and loss of lives. The Gauteng Traffic Police will continue to patrol on Gauteng’s major routes to ensure that road users comply with the rules and regulations of the road.

“In our concerted efforts to save the lives of road users, the Gauteng Traffic Police will conduct a series of road safety activations in various hazardous locations as part of the Road Safety Education programme,” Maremane added.
