Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) will be among five municipalities in South Africa to hold municipal ward by-elections on Wednesday June 1.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) spokesperson Kate Bapela, Ward 29 will be contested by four candidates from local political parties in the region.
“The ward will be contested by Wanelisa Moche from the African National Congress (ANC); Petrus Popo Sebe from the Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO); Dorah Nonhlanhla Tshupane from the Democratic Alliance (DA); and Lindokuhle Emmanuel Biyela from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor passed away. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 34,90% and the ANC candidate won the ward by 47,95% of valid the votes,” Bapela said.
In the same statement, Bapela said there will be by-elections in other municipalities and different provinces such as Ward 53 in the City of Johannesburg; Ward 03 in the uMvoti Municipality (KZN); Ward 10 in the Dr JS Moroka Municipality (Mpumalanga); and Ward 04 in the Kareeberg Municipality (Northern Cape).
