Bekkersdal speedsters nabbed for exceeding 130km/h in 80km/h zone

Gauteng Traffic Police arrest two drivers for violation of road traffic rules and regulations on the N12 freeway.

Gauteng Traffic Police arrested two male drivers aged 58 and 45 for violating road traffic rules and regulations following an operation conducted along the N12 freeway in the Western corridor on Tuesday, July 5.

The drivers of a black Ford Ranger and a blue GWM P series respectively were detained immediately at Bekkersdal police station after being found speeding at an average of between 130km/h and 134km/h where the prescribed speed limit was 80km/h. It is believed both drivers had already appeared in the Bekkersdal Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday, July 6) to face charges relating to reckless and negligent driving, with an alternative charge of exceeding the prescribed speed limit.

“It is unfortunate that the drivers continue to put the lives of Gauteng road users at risk through reckless and negligent driving behaviour. We urge drivers always to comply with the rules and regulations of the road in order to save lives,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.

Many road fatalities that the province continues to record are due to unroadworthy vehicles, unsafe overtaking, over-speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and general disregard of the rules of the road or road traffic signs, among others.

The Gauteng Traffic Police will intensity operations on Gauteng’s major routes to deal decisively with transgressors.

“We will lead a series of road-safety activations and operations across the province in order to save lives, and will ensure that all drivers who conduct themselves with impunity are detained,” added Maremane.
