Young woman caught offering over 100 rounds of live ammunition for sale

Community members of Bekkersdal cornered the woman and while searching a bag they found the ammunition.

Community members in Bekkersdal called the police after they had caught a 25-year-old woman, who is a Lesotho national, selling live ammunition on the streets.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said it’s alleged that the community was gathering at a forum discussing their community issues on Thursday, July 21 at 16:00 when they were alerted by one of the community members that a woman carrying a plastic bag was busy selling live ammunition.

“The group immediately cornered the woman and upon searching her they indeed found live ammunition inside a plastic bag. When asked about the ammunition she said it belonged to her boyfriend. They took her to her place and more ammunition, a firearm, rubber bullets, security handcuffs and an ammunition belt were found and seized.”

A firearm was also found in her possession. Photo submitted.

Lefakane said the police were informed but attempts to trace the boyfriend were without success; however investigations are underway.

The woman was arrested and will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, and for the contravention of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 as she has no documentation to be the country legally. She is expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon.”

The Bekkersdal Police Station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela praised the community and further appreciated the fact that they did not take matters into their own hands as they handed the suspect to the police without harming her.

“This is a sign of a good working relationship. Working together we can do more.” said Matamela.
